At a time when Chinese products flood Indian markets, Pradip Shetty, an entrepreneur in China over 22 years, is all set to introduce coir products to the Chinese.

Mr. Shetty said he had procured the licence for importing coir products into China. “Already I have been allotted a shop in a busy market in China.

“As of now they buy coir products from Philippines, which is cheaper than Indian coir products. I had introduced the products at the Yiwu Imported Commodities Fair (Yiwu Fair) and at Canton Fair. The Chinese evinced great interest in the product,” he said.

He said he had held talks with authorities of Foam Mattings (India) Limited at Coir Kerala 2013 meet, but would be looking beyond Fomil to attract more diversified products. “I am basically looking for coir mats, geo-textiles and mattresses. Coir products are perhaps the only thing that Chinese are not dealing in now,” he said. He said Coir Minister Adoor Prakash, Coir secretary Rani George and director, National Coir Research and Management Institute (NCRMI), K.R. Anil had visited China twice to study the market there.

Dwelling on his 22 years of doing business in China, Mr. Shetty, said there was immense scope for Ayurvedic massages in China. People there go to massage centres regularly for relaxation unlike in India where it is thought of as therapy. “Interestingly, they use a lot of blind people for massage, who will tell you by touching where exactly in your body the problem lies,” he said.
