Pathanamthitta: A group, allegedly belonging to the sand mafia, detained a revenue raid party led by Kozhencherry Tahsildar D. Sugathan at Valamchuzhy Vallakadavu, near here, on Friday.

They were demanding open auction of the sand seized by the police from Valamchuzhy recently instead of handing it over to the State-run Nirmiti Kendra.

The revenue team was released after the arrival of the police from Pathanamthitta. A case was registered against 15 persons in connection with the incident, police said.

Collector’s order

District Collector T.T. Antony, who is also the District Magistrate, ordered that stern action be taken to check illegal sand-mining by invoking the provisions of the Goonda Act.

Illegal river sand-mining had been posing serious law and order issues in different parts of the district.

The Collector said in a press release here that it was high time that the rivers are saved from the ill effects of indiscriminate sand-mining.
