The summer showers that lashed the district from early morning on Friday provided some respite from the sweltering weather. The sky had remained overcast since Thursday evening and it started drizzling early on Friday morning. The rain, accompanied by lightning, picked up momentum by 10 a.m. and continued well past 1 p.m.

However, the areca and coconut farmers had to make hasty arrangements to cover the farm produce that had been kept in the open for drying, K. Balaraman Nair, a farmer in Parappa block panchayat, told The Hindu .
