The work on the proposed subway connecting Samkranthy with Chemmanampadi will begin soon, said Jose.K. Mani MP. He said the fund for the project was ready and the Railways had assigned the job to a contractor.

The Railways, at the request of the State government, had carried out the preliminary studies to fix the budget.

The amount, Rs.1.77 crore, was later deposited with the Railways in advance by February 2013. After completing the formalities, the Railways assigned the work to the contractor. The works would begin as soon as the girders arrive from Kaanjangadu, Mr Mani said.

The construction of the subway is a long-pending demand from the local people. The Railway line passes through a thickly populated area here and the people have to cross the railway line frequently as places of worship and educational institutions are on the other side of the line.
