117 litres of illicit liquor seized in raid

THRISSUR: A three-member gang assaulted Sub-Inspector (SI) of Chalakkudy police station P.R. Bijoy as he intercepted them while transporting illicit liquor in an autorikshaw at Mechira, near Chalakkudy, early on Tuesday. Mr Bijoy jumped into the autorikshaw as it did not stop even after instructions during a vehicle inspection drive by a police team led by him.

The gang then attacked him and pushed him down from the vehicle.

Braving his injuries the SI chased the autorikshaw in the police jeep. But the autorikshaw turned turtle as it hit a traffic police outpost at the nearby junction and the accused escaped under the cover of darkness leaving the vehicle there.

Seizure

The police have seized 117 litres of illicit liquor, which was being transported in 79 bottles in the autorikshaw.

The vehicle has also been seized by the police. Mr Bijoy has been admitted to the St James Hospital, Chalakkudy, but his condition is reported to be `not serious'.

The police said search is on to nab the accused.
