KOLLAM: The right hand of a student got severed after she was hit by a train on Friday morning while crossing the railway tracks at the Kollam railway station.

Fesildonna Marydasan, 18, a computer applications degree student at the Fatima Mata National College (FMNC), was hit by the Thiruvananthapuram-bound Inter City Express. She is a resident of Padappakara.

She had come by bus and alighted at Chinnakada and took the railway complex short cut, something which a good number of students do to reach the FMNC and the Sree Narayana college.

The accident took place at the east end of platform number four while the train was about to enter it.

Neglect alleged

There were allegations that the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel on duty ignored the victim. But a commuter who was to board the Inter City Express saw that she was alive and took the initiative to rush her to the hospital. It was only after this that the RPF personnel intervened. After preliminary treatment at the district hospital, she was rushed to the Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.

Fesildonna Marydasan was identified by two nurses from her neighbourhood on duty at the district hospital. Her relatives were immediately informed.
