Thrissur: Ten students of a school in Velappaya were on Friday admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here after they showed symptoms of suspected viral meningitis.

District Medical Officer Rajan Warrier on Saturday said they were under observation. The children had fever, headache and nausea. The blood samples had been sent to the Institute of Virology, Alappuzha. “The children will be under observation even after they are discharged. Viral meningtis is endemic to Thrissur. Cases were reported in Padiyur four years ago,” Dr. Warrier said. Bacterial meningitis can result in brain damage, hearing loss or learning disability. Viral meningitis is less severe. “There is no cause for panic. Three of the students will be discharged immediately,” he said.
