Strike total

in Kottayam

The strike called by various trade unions against the increase in the price of petrol was total and peaceful in the district. With traders joining the protest, the strike turned into a virtual hartal. Police said there had been no untoward incident in connection with the strike. Private vehicles were seen on the roads. Train passengers at the Kottayam railway station had a hard time, as no vehicles were available for them to move out. However, the worst affected were the thousands of youngsters who had been in the town to participate in the army recruitment rally, which began on Thursday. — Staff Reporter
