Despite P.J. Kurien’s claim that Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley is convinced of his innocence in the Suryanelli case, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Thursday, said the Deputy Chairperson of the House should step down.
Asked about Prof. Kurien’s comments that Mr. Jaitley had fought his case as a lawyer in the Supreme Court and would never say he was guilty, BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said, “the BJP had asked for Prof. Kurien’s resignation.”
The fact that the BJP was demanding Prof. Kurien’s resignation explained the party’s official stand and there should be no confusion, she said.
The party had initially maintained that the law would take its own course. The party finally took another stand — apparently under pressure from the Kerala unit — and demanded Prof. Kurien’s resignation on ‘moral grounds.’ BJP was also facing a difficult situation as the issue may come up for discussion in the House. — PTI
