Thrissur: A major portion of the Backward Rural Grant Fund (BRGF) offered by the Centre to 250 districts in the country for implementation of projects by local bodies remained unclaimed, according to an official from Union Panchayatiraj Ministry. Inaugurating a three-day national workshop here, T R Raghunandan, Joint Secretary in the Ministry, said that out of a total Rs 500 crore earmarked under the scheme in the last two years only Rs 200 crore had been claimed. This was due to the inability of the Local Self Government Institutions to present suitable projects under the scheme. Under the scheme, each selected district was entitled for a grant of Rs 1 crore each a year. While the states maintained they had been utilising the funds for projects to be carried out through local bodies, that claim had not been substantiated by figures, he said. — PTI
