KOCHI: Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) leader Thampan Thomas on Tuesday said the railway budget had neglected some of the key requirements of the State. Districts such as Wayanad and Idukki were yet to be included on the railway map. Once these districts were connected on the railway network it would help the State to transport cash crops from there, he said.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Thomas said a goods station should be set up at Kalamasserry. This would be necessary in the wake of the international container transhipment terminal being set up at Vallarpadam, he said. A suburban railway project for Kochi as well as a tourist train to Munnar should also be considered, he said.

He said the railway budget had ignored the role of employees in the progress of the organisation. Though the railway budget was welcome in general, the Railway Minister had failed to acknowledge the good work done by the employees, the HMS leader said.

The HMS would take up issues pertaining to changes in labour laws at a meeting with the Union Government on March 1. Trade unions led by M.V. Raghavan, M.K. Kannan and C.P. John have been affiliated to the HMS. HMS youth wing president Jacob Oommen said that the women's wing of the Sabha would take out a march to Parliament on March 1 against price rise and unemployment.
