Chandy sees attempt to hide failures
Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has lashed out at Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan for blaming officials for the LDF Government's political inefficiency and ineptitude.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Chandy, reacting to the Chief Minister's address to Government officials the other day, said Mr. Achuthanandan's observations were nothing but an attempt to conceal the political leadership's failure.
Mr. Achuthanandan had chided Government officials for their failure to address the farm crisis and for not removing a recruitment ban. Mr. Chandy said the Government had nothing to solve the crisis facing the farm sector. It had brought in a legislation setting up a debt commission, but other than this, no concrete measures had been taken to reach relief to the hapless farmers. The officials had no role in the debt commission. As for the second charge, the UDF Government did not impose any recruitment ban. In fact, his Government had made 20,000 appointments within a matter of 100 days as part of his campaign to improve the Government's performance. And the same officials implemented the policy. "The Chief Minister has realised the strong public opinion against his Government and he is merely trying to put the blame on officials," Mr. Chandy said. He said the Chief Minister was silent about the steep rise in prices. No official had been directed to take steps to tackle the price situation. He wanted the Chief Minister to disclose the reasons for the delay in clearing the Central takeover of Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology.
