Kozhikode: Mayor M. Bhaskaran will inaugurate the valedictory function of the “eye donation fortnight” observed by Comtrust Eye Bank at Puthiyara here on September 8.
Lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri will deliver the keynote address on the occasion. The bank functioning under the Comtrust Eye Care Society began the initiative on August 25.
It is being observed for the 22nd time and as per the guidelines of the Directorate of Health and Eye Bank Association of India, said T.O. Ramachandran, general manager, Comtrust Eye Hospital, and secretary, Comtrust Eye Care Society.
The eye donation fortnight was being observed every year with a view to creating awareness among the public on eye donation. A variety of programmes including photo exhibition, interaction with relatives of donors and recipients, elocution competition for college students, lectures by doctors and surgeons were held during the period, he said.
He said that the eye bank had the facility to collect corneas from the deceased round-the-clock. Corneas had to be collected within six hours of death and transplanted on patients with corneal blindness within 72 hours. The hospital maintained a waiting list of patients for this purpose. Four corneas were received during the fortnight, Mr. Ramachandran said.
He said that relatives of the deceased persons had to maintain certain minimum precautions for the corneas to be in good condition if these were to be transplanted. A clean cloth should be placed over the eyes of the deceased. The head of the deceased should be slightly raised. All the ceiling fans in the room should be switched off.
The toll free telephone number of the eye bank is 1053. The eye bank team will finish its job within 20 minutes.
Since only the transparent cornea is removed there will not be any disfigurement of the face. Besides, a thin plastic artificial material will be fixed in its place, he said.
