RMP, CPI(M) offices come under attack
: Isolated incidents of violence were reported during a dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) in four grama panchayats in Vadakara taluk on Monday in protest against the attack on its workers allegedly by activists of the Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M) at Onchiyam on Sunday evening.
The police said stones were hurled at the branch offices of both the political parties at Kannukkara and Orkatteri. Banners and posters were also destroyed at several places.
The hartal was called at Chorode, Azhiyur, Onchiyam and Eramala grama panchayats . The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) supported the hartal.
A large posse of policemen has been deployed in the troubled spots. A contingent of a Malabar Special Police is part of the patrolling police team.
No one has been arrested in connection with the violence on Sunday and the incidents on Monday.
On Sunday evening, the CPI (M) activists attacked a motorcade of the RMP soon after the inauguration of a seminar by CPI (M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan on Nadapuram road at Onchiyam. At least 3,000 people had gathered to participate in the seminar while another 300 took out a motorcycle rally near the seminar venue.
The CPI (M) local leaders alleged that RMP activists had planned to disrupt the seminar organised as part of the upcoming 20th party congress of the CPI(M) in April in the city. However, RMP leaders said the CPI (M) activists carried out the attack as the party leadership was stunned by the support the RMP had at Onchiyam.
