Thiruvananthapuram: The district administration will constitute a special squad to crack down on unauthorised cashew processing, Collector N. Ayyappan announced here on Thursday. Presiding over a meeting held here, he said the illegal operations were resulting in loss for factories, employees and the Government.
Mr. Ayyappan said the activities were more common in the Nedumangad and Chirayinkeezh taluks in the district. The special squads would visit these areas and take action against the unauthorised units. Additional Tahsildars would be put in charge of the squads comprising officials from the Police, Revenue, Legal Metrology, Labour and Factories and Boilers departments and the Pollution Control Board. The Additional District Magistrate will coordinate the operations of the squad in the district. The Collector said the illegal units were depriving employees of their legitimate rights like welfare fund and Provident Fund share and ESI benefits. Many legally functioning factories also had to close down because of these operations. The meeting was attended by officials of the Police, Revenue, ESI and Labour departments.
