Excise officials have arrested five persons involved in smuggling liquor from Mahe.
The officials said in a press release here on Friday that they were arrested in separate cases of smuggling of Indian-made foreign liquor from Mahe. The arrested have been identified as K.A.C. Ramachandran from Panappuzha, C.V. Babu from Elayavur, Modappathi Latheesh from Kayaralam, K. Babu from Iriveri and Punchavayal Habeeb from Kannapuram. A total of 27 litres of liquor were seized from them, the release said.
The officials said the raids were intensified following complaints about incidents of liquor smuggling from Mahe. Assistant Excise Commissioner V.V. Surendran and Deputy Excise Commissioner V. Jayarajan led the raid team. The release said in January, the Excise Department had registered 88 Abkari cases and six narcotic cases. Nearly 89 accused in these cases were arrested. The Excise personnel had also seized liquor smuggled from Karnataka last month and seized three vehicles, the release added.
