The State conference of the Socialist Janata (Democratic) [SJ(D)] will be held in Kozhikode from October 11 to 13, party leaders said at a press meet here on Wednesday.

The conference, which is expected to pass a few important resolutions concerning the economic and political stance of the party, will also deliberate on the environmental perspective the party should have on the emerging development issues, organising committee chairman of the conference M.V. Sreyams Kumar, MLA, said.

Elaborate preparations, including ward-level membership campaigns and organisational elections from panchayat to district levels, had been completed, Mr. Sreyams Kumar said. As many as 1,030 selected party members from across the State will attend the delegates’ meet at Tagore Centenary Hall here as part of the conference.

Mr. Sreyams Kumar, who stated that the party had not made any serious reflections yet on its entry to the national level through an alliance with other parties, said its leadership would be in the forefront for any discussions that would lead to a meaningful unification of the socialist parties.

Asked why the party, which was handling the agriculture portfolio, was not coming forth to take up and sort out the pressing issues of farmers, especially coconut farmers, party leader Manayath Chandran, who is also the chairman of Kerafed, said the Agriculture Department was going ahead with urgent measures to ensure the procurement of raw coconut through all the Krishi Bhavans in all panchayats in the State for a fair price. “The procurement will start by next March,” he said.

The leaders said the State conference would feature an exhibition on the history of socialist movements, volunteer march of around 10,000 party activists, and a mass rally.
