The rift between Socialist Janata Dal (SJD) and the Congress, both constituents of the United Democratic Front (UDF,) in Chittur, came out in the open on Saturday with SJD district leaders criticising Congress candidate K. Achuthan for his “insulting statements against SJD.”

Addressing pressmen here, party district President U. Thajudeen and Socialist Yuva Janata district president V. Murukadas said that their party had decided to stay away from the election conventions of the Congress candidate in Chittur. The UDF leaders had promised the Chittur seat to SJD, but had gone back on its work, they said. “Mr. Achuthan's remarks in the presence of top UDF leaders at his election convention — that the SJD has no base in Chittur and he does not need the party's vote base to win — have angered the party's workers. Such statements from a candidate are insulting, they said.
