Veda Vyasa Vidyalaya emerges runners-up in a close contest

KOZHIKODE: Defending champions T.V. Raziman and Aswin Sasidharan of Silver Hills HSS retained the title in the Kozhikode edition of The Hindu-Young World Quiz 2006 held at the Tagore Centenary Hall here on Monday. They will represent Kozhikode in the national finals to be held in Madurai on November 14.

Both Raziman and Aswin Sasidharan were winners of the Kozhikode edition of The Hindu-Young World Quiz 2005. Aswin said that he was glad to win the title for the second time.

The team from Silver Hills scored 53 points, beating M.P. Amith and P. Govind of Veda Vyasa Vidyalaya, Kozhikode, by two points in a close contest. The team from Veda Vyasa Vidyalaya was the runners-up. Rani Public School, Vadakara, represented by S. Sarath and U. Sabarinath came third with 43 points. The other three teams that reached the final round were Dayapuram Residential School and Spring Valley School, both in Chathamangalam, near here, and Malabar Christian College HSS.

Of the total 213 teams that participated in the contest from 88 schools in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, only six teams were selected for the final rounds.

District Collector A. Jayathilak, who was the chief guest, said he was happy to note that the quizzing tradition of Kerala was still alive and kicking. He said the quiz on Monday reminded him of his college days when he was an active participant of in quizzes. Dr. Jayathilak had captained the Indian quiz team for an international contest in Islamabad.

Best outstation team

The best outstation team was Bhavan's Vidyashram from Chelembra in Malappuram district. The second best out-station team was MES Central School from Tirur in Malappuram district. The team from Cherpulassery English Medium Central School, Palakkad, named `Einstein's workshop,' won the best team name prize. The team from WMO English Academy at Muttil in Wayanad district, titled `Kalam's dream kids' won the prize for second-best team. The team from ISS School, Perinthalmanna in Malappuram district, named `Quizzbhai MBBS,' won the prize for the third best team name.

Eveready is the title sponsor this time and Jamaai ice-cream the associate sponsor. The following are the national sponsors: State Bank of Travancore, Britannia Tiger Biscuits, Garden City College, HP Invent Printers, Reliance Hello, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Cycle Brand Agarbathi, Vizag Steel, Reynolds and Penguin Books. Maaza is the official drink and SS Music is the TV sponsor.

The regional sponsors are Samsung India Electronics, Nutrifud Cakes, Vijayalaxmi Cashews, Club Mahindra, G-Tec Computer Education and Veegaland. The event was managed by Quizwallahs.

SS Music will telecast the Kozhikode edition of the Quiz at 6 p.m. on October 21. This will be repeated at 6 p.m. on October 24 and at 10.30 a.m. on October 25 on SS Music.
