ALAPPUZHA: With the monsoon leading to an ‘unmanageable’ rise in water levels in the Pampa, Achenkovil and Manimala rivers, the district administration has raised all the shutters of the

Thottapally spillway, which facilitates flow of the river water into the Arabian Sea.

Sand accumulated on the west of the spillway has also been removed to facilitate flow of the water into the sea.

This is expected to lead to a strong surge and the flow might be too strong for small boats.

Fishermen alerted

Fishermen, houseboats and other modes of water transport have been alerted to exercise caution in the region, an official release from Irrigation Executive Engineer P.D. Joseph said.
