People getting readyfor Id-ul-Fitr and Onam

The town is in a festive mood, with people here bracing for Id-ul-Fitr and Onam festivals and different fairs and shopping centres drawing huge crowd of people shopping for the upcoming festivals.

As the month-long Ramzan fasting comes to an end and Muslims here are preparing for the Id feast, the town is already experiencing the rush of people visiting shops to buy new clothes and other accesories. The Onam festival season, just days away, will keep the festive ambience on after Id.

Frequent showers have not dampened the shopping extravaganza. The handloom fair being held at the Town Square has become a major stopover for buyers of quality handloom products woven by dozens of cooperative handloom weavers’ societies.

The fair underway in the nearby showroom of the Khadi Board is also attracting people to buy khadi and village industries products. The handicrafts ‘mela’ in the Kairali showroom of the Kerala State Handicrafts Corporation is drawing handicraft enthusiasts.

The Onam fair under the aegis of the IRDP/SGSY and self help groups, beginning at the Municipal Town Hall here on August 23, is also expected to draw large crowds.

The Ramzan food festival at the Town has been a major attraction in the town, as the food kiosks that open during the time the fast is broken sell traditional and popular Ramzan fare.

People throng the kiosks in the evenings to taste the local delicacies.

Apart from the handloom, khadi and handicraft fairs that offer government rebates, electronic shops and textile shops are also attracting festival-season buyers with various seasonal offers and discounts.

Cultural programmes are being arranged to add colour to the Onam festivities. The rush of shoppers to the town has already started affecting the road traffic. Parts of the town experience traffic congestions during day time and evenings.

The Excise Department here also has accelerated steps to check smuggling of liquor during the festival season.

The Department has already launched a special drive for this as well as to check the sale of hooch.

The officials here said a control room had been opened and a special striking team had been constituted for patrolling and intercepting vehicles engaged in smuggling liquor from the neighbouring States.
