THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Shiv Sena workers staged a road blockade in front of the Fort police station on Monday with the body of a 23-year-old youth who committed suicide allegedly due to police intimidation.

Around 75-odd activists, who arrived with the body of Vimal Kumar alias Kuttan after post mortem examination from Medical College Hospital around 5 p.m., staged a dharna in front of the station. They demanded action against Sub-Inspector Suresh V. Nair, who, according to them, intimidated the youth.

Vimal Kumar, 23, a Shiv Sena worker attached to a flower shop in front of Sree Padamanabha Swamy Temple, is a resident of Thamarathu Veedu, T.C. 54/50(1) Kalady.

The youth was found hanging from a tree on a plot at Kulathara near the Cherupazhanji temple in the Karamana police station limits around 11 a.m. on Monday.

Fort police said the youth was arrested on the charge of throwing stones at KSRTC buses during the October 21 hartal in the district. Vimal Kumar was booked under the PDP Act and was produced in the court. He was out on bail.

Shiv Sena activists said the Sub-Inspector asked the youth to trim his hair and had intimidated him to get the whereabouts of others involved in the stone-throwing incident. He allegedly told the youth on Sunday that he would be booked if he did not provide details of those involved.

According to them, Vimal Kumar was upset and worried after this. He was missing from Sunday night. The activists shouted slogans against the Sub-Inspector and demanded his suspension. Shops in the Fort-Manacaud area were forcibly closed by the activists.

The blockade was called off around 6 p.m. after talks with Deputy Commissioner of Police N. Gopalakrishnan.
