KOLLAM: Fishing community members living at the Thanni coast near here have protested against building a seawall along the Thoppe coast near Thanni. Their contention is that the seawall will affect their livelihood.

About 500 families in the area are traditional fishermen who use the Thoppe coast as a fish landing centre. A seawall will deprive them of this natural facility in which case they will have to depend on the Eravipuram or Paravur landing sites, which are far from their homes. Moreover the Thoppe landing site is a facility they had enjoyed for generations.

But, a few families near the Thoppe coast insist that a seawall should come up there. The coast stands highly vulnerable to rough seas especially during the monsoon, they point out.

Heated exchanges over the issue between the two groups are becoming a regular feature of the area. Those opposing the seawall said they would submit a memorandum to District Collector A. Shajahan soon.
