Tension prevailed for nearly an hour at Eranhipalam Junction on Wednesday morning after a student on bike was seriously injured when the police attempted to forcefully stop him for not wearing a helmet.

Irate onlookers and students of JDT Arts and Science College, Vellimadukunnu, blocked National Highway 212 (Wayanad Road) demanding action against the police personnel.

There was a minor scuffle between the police and the protesters when a police team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) V.K. Abdul Khadar bundled some of the protesters into a police vehicle. The incident occurred around 10.30 a.m. According to eyewitnesses, M. Jamshad and his friend Salman Faris, undergraduate students at JDT Arts and Science College, were going to the city from Vellimadukunnu when they were caught at the traffic junction. They were not wearing helmets. They tried to speed away to escape the police.

The police advanced to forcefully stop them and caught hold of Jamshad, who was riding pillion. Jamshad was accidentally pulled down by a policeman and was run over by an autorickshaw. Jamshad was seriously injured and was taken to hospital by the policemen.
