KOCHI: Seminars and quiz competitions marked National Science Day celebrations in Kochi on Wednesday.

The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) organised a `Science Day oration.' Bhatnagar award winner and Madurai Kamaraj University Emeritus Professor T.J. Pandian delivered a lecture. He said the country was behind when it came to the number of science publications and articles related to science and technology. Dr. Pandian urged the scientific community to contribute more research articles for the welfare of society. University Vice-Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis presided.

A science quiz competition and a hologram exhibition were held at Ernakulam Government Maharajas College.

The day was observed at the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL). Its director, S. Ananthanarayanan, addressed a gathering of scientists and staff of the NPOL. NPOL scientist C.V.K. Prasad Rao delivered a lecture on `Indian Ocean: evolution and uniqueness.' Mr. Ananthanarayanan presented the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) Science Day medal and commendation to Mr. Rao. K.G. Nair, director, Centre for Science in Society of the Cusat, delivered a lecture on spirit of scientific inquiry. Prizes to the winners of the quiz competition were presented. K. Aravindakshan, scientist, bagged the first prize in the essay competition on `How to create brand DRDO,' conducted by the DRDO.
