For higher studies from current academic year

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government will provide scholarships and hostel fee for Muslim girls who are pursuing degree, post-graduate and professional courses from the current academic year. As many as 5,000 scholarships will be awarded this year.

An order for giving scholarships to Muslim girls has been issued considering the recommendations of the Paloli Mohammed Kutty committee’s recommendations on the Sachar Committee report. (The government had appointed an 11-member committee headed by Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty to explore the possibility of implementing the Sachar Committee report in the State.) A notification to distribute scholarships was issued on Tuesday.

An official release issued here said that the scholarship for degree courses had been fixed at Rs.3,000, for post-graduate courses at Rs.4,000 and for professional courses at Rs.5,000. Students staying in government hostels will get a monthly fee of Rs.1,000.

The maximum amount for a student in a year has been fixed at Rs.10,000. This will be given through the Collegiate Education Director till the completion of the course.

Such steps were being taken to end the educational backwardness of Muslim girls, the release said.
