Sarga Sangamam 2011, a five-day cultural festival aimed at nurturing the talent of industrial workers in the State is being organised jointly by HLL Lifecare and the State Bank of India (SBI) here from Tuesday.
HLL Chairman and Managing Director M. Ayyappan and veteran thespian Kavalam Narayana Panikkar, who is also the jury chairman of the festival, told reporters here on Monday that the highlight of the festival was the presentation of the first ‘Sarga Sangamam' lifetime achievement award in the field of theatre to actor Thilakan. The festival aimed at forging a bond in the industrial sector through art and cultural activities. Various private and public sector industrial units had offered to support the festival which would offer a platform to the workers to showcase their talent.
Speaker G. Karthikeyan will inaugurate the festival at the recreation club hall on HLL premises at Peroorkada and present the award. Mr. Ayyappan will preside over the function. Organising committee chairman Babu Thomas would welcome the audience. Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi chairman Soorya Krishnamoorthy would offer felicitations and recreation club secretary Mohan Kumar would propose a vote of thanks. Mr. Panikkar would lead a workshop on theatre and deliver a lecture on ‘Indian theatre' ahead of the inaugural function. S. Radhakrishnan of All India Radio will be the moderator.
Thespian Raja Warrier will talk about ‘Modern stage settings.' Artiste Rajeswari will present a paper on ‘Women's role in theatre' on Wednesday. The competition section would feature 10 plays, shortlisted from the entries received, to be presented by industrial units. The best play would get the M.K.K. Nair Memorial Trophy, Rs.25,000, a citation, and a plaque. The plays ‘Sabarmathi' by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation team and ‘Ottappalam' by Model Food Products would be staged on the inaugural day.
