THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: G. Sankara Pillai initiated a new awareness in Malayalam theatre, Kendra Sangeetha Nataka Akademi vice-chairman, Kavalam Narayana Panikkar has said.

He was inaugurating a meeting organised by Samskara Sahithi, a cultural group, here to commemorate the eminent playwright.

Sankara Pillai taught the present generation that drama does not mean learning lines by rote and repeating these on the stage, Mr. Panikkar said.

He infused a new creativity into Malayalam theatre.

Former director of the School of Drama Vayala Vasudevan Pillai said Sankara Pillai imparted aestheticism and robustness to Malayalam drama.

He wanted drama to keep pace with the times. Actor Bharat Gopi and George Onakkur also spoke.

Sankara Pillai's play, `Nidhiyum Neethiyum', was performed by Vithura Suhrid Vedi.
