The meeting of the Kottayam Municipal Council ended in disarray after allegations of corruption and malpractices at the municipal office came up before it on Tuesday.

The councillors, cutting across the political spectrum, alleged nexus between ruling front members and the contractors.

They pointed out that the failure to ensure maintenance of streets lights on a regular basis was due to this unholy nexus between the contractor who has an annual maintenance contract (AMC) the municipal authorities. Municipal chairman M.P. Santhosh Kumar said he would look into the issue.

However, the concerned municipal authorities maintained that the delay was due to the issues related paying the outstanding amount to the contractor.

Road work

Meanwhile, the chairman informed the meeting that Rs.8 crore had been sanctioned for the maintenance of roads within the municipal area. Another Rs.3.5 lakhs has been sanctioned for modernising the bio gas plant at the new vegetable market at Kodimatha.

The Mammen Mappillai Memorial Town Hall would be closed for one month to take up the maintenance work. The administration has also entered into an agreement with the Kottayam Agri-Horticulture Society for undertaking maintenance work at the Jubilee Memorial Municipal Park.
