Arrests made from different parts of district

A CPI(M) activist enlisted the help of the students

Their duty was to conceal the car used by assailants

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police have arrested four students of a private engineering college in Nedumangad on the charge of abetting the murder of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activist Renjith at Mannanthala, near here, last month.

Circle Inspector K.E. Baiju, the investigating officer, arrested them from different locations in the district late on Tuesday.

The police said “Velli” Narayanan, a Communist Party of India (Marxist) activist at Vanchiyoor, enlisted the help of the students for the crime.

They said Narayanan had helped the students in a ragging issue at the college. He recruited them primarily for concealing the car used by the assailants and destroying any evidence in it.

The students had visited Narayanan while he was in prison on the charge of attempting to kill RSS activist Mohanan. The police said Renjith’s killing and the attack on Mohanan were in retaliation for the murder of CPI(M) activist “Vanchiyoor” Vishnu in April. The police had earlier arrested three low ranking leaders of the CPI(M) on the charge of plotting Renjith’s murder.

The accused were Vishnu’s close friends and also his partners in the lucrative business of selling earth from razed hillocks to realtors reclaiming wetlands for construction. They also had interests in the thriving real estate business in the district.

The police said the accused had a personal score to settle with Vishnu’s killers, allegedly a group of rival RSS men from Mannanthala.

Some of the RSS men had business interests comparable to that of their political opponents in Vanchiyoor. The opposing groups were in conflict with each other for quite some time, though not always for political reasons.

The police booked the students on the charge of abetment, conspiracy and destruction of evidence.
