State secretary of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) A.A. Azeez has said that his party has neither betrayed the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] nor the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

“It is the CPI(M) which has betrayed the RSP and the voters of Kerala are aware of it,” he said while addressing a meet-the-press programme organised by the Kollam Press Club on Friday.

Mr. Azeez said that in spite of all the baseless counter campaign against the RSP unleashed by CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, the voters were not falling for it.

All the agitations led by the CPI(M) in recent years had drawn a blank. “When Mr. Vijayan took the sudden decision to end the day and night agitation, it confused and eroded the morale of the cadres of that party. Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan asked me over phone to strongly react to the decision,” Mr. Azeez said.

‘VS a caged bird’

The people of Kerala had often witnessed the ill-treatment meted out to Mr. Achuthanandan by the CPI(M) leadership. “Mr. Achuthanandan was kept like a caged bird by the party leadership not allowing him to attend any important party function. And now due to bankruptcy of popular leaders, the CPI(M) is relying on Mr. Achuthanandan for leading the party’s election campaign,’’ he alleged.

The CPI(M) was today in a desperate situation when it came to establishing itself as a national-level political party. To achieve that, the CPI(M) betrayed the RSP in the State and was running helter-skelter in other States in search of allies who could offer seats.

In Tamil Nadu, the CPI(M) initially went after the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhakam (AIADMK) and when that did not work out, the party went behind the DMK. In Bihar, when the CPI(M) failed to get Nitish Kumar as its ally, the party went behind Lalu Prasad.

All this exposed the pathetic situation in which the CPI(M) was, Mr. Azeez said.

‘No justification’

The snatching away of the Kollam Lok Sabha seat by the CPI(M) from the RSP in 1999 cannot in anyway be justified. Till that year, the RSP had been continuously contesting from Kollam, he said.

He says the CPI(M) is running helter-skelter in other States in search of allies.
