Two persons died in rain-related calamities

Crop loss estimated at Rs.15.09 lakh

KANNUR: The district suffered an estimated loss of Rs. 44.58 lakh owing to monsoon calamity since the onset of the rainy season.

An official press release here on Wednesday disclosed that the estimated figures pertained to losses recorded from June 1 and July 2.The district received a total rainfall of 848.22 mm during the period, it said.

Two people died in rain-related calamities and six cattle perished. 12.08 hectare of agricultural land was damaged in the heavy rain that lashed in some parts of the district. The crop loss was estimated at Rs. 15.09 lakh. As many as 14 houses in Kannur, Thalassery and Taliparamba taluks had been completely damaged. The estimated loss was Rs. 7.05 lakh.

The press release also said that 140 houses had been partially damaged and officials estimated the loss at Rs. 16.76 lakh. The release also said that the Kerala State Electricity Board suffered a loss of Rs. 5.68 lakh from equipment damages caused during the season.
