The district panchayat is set to embark on a rodent control project in view of the spread of communicable diseases, including leptospirosis, in the district.

District Panchayat President Eldhose Kunnappillil said that the project would be launched on Wednesday. The decision came at a general body meeting of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) held at the district panchayat.

The project envisages distribution of cakes laced with rat poison to 7.5 lakh households in the districts under the leadership of ward members concerned. It will be implemented through ASHA workers. Instructions regarding the use of poisoned cakes will be given by health workers. The project is part of strengthening awareness against leptospirosis.

The sanitation fund allotted at ward level by NRHM will be utilised for the project implementation.

The NRHM will extend support to start 10 teenage clubs in colleges in the district. One such club will be opened at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, on October 22.
