: The police on Thursday arrested two persons, including the complainant, Siddique, in connection with the robbery of Rs.2.33 lakh from him on the National Highway at Polayathodu on Wednesday evening.

The police arrested Siddique and his accomplice, Biju.

Siddique had complained to the police that he was waylaid by two motorcycle-borne assailants when he was on his way to deposit the money in a nearby bank. The police team recovered Rs.1.5 lakh from the arrested persons. A third suspect is absconding.

Kollam District Superintendent of Police Harshita Attaluri had constituted a special police team under the supervision of Kollam Dy.SP B. Krishna Kumar and led by East Kallada Sub-Inspector G. Gopakumar to investigate the case.

The money belonged to a private company where Siddique was employed and he used to regularly carry such amounts to the bank. He had told the police that he was waylaid by two men who threw chilly powder into his eyes and decamped with the money. Mr. Gopakumar said Siddique was involved in financial malpractices and required the money to cover up these acts. The police identified the third suspect as Mahin. Constables Dhanapalan, Venyu, Madhusoodhanan, Rajiv and Joy were part of the special team.
