Work on commercial port at Ponnani will begin in a month

Minister for Excise and Ports K. Babu has said that the government will consider the demand for a sea rescue boat for

Malappuram district.

Mr. Babu was responding to Tanur MLA Abdurahman Randathani’s demand while laying the foundation for a new bridge linking the shores of Tanur and Parappanangadi on Friday.

He also said the work on the proposed commercial port at Ponnani would begin in a month. He said that Rs.763 crore would be spent for the port construction.

The Minister said the government would give houses to all homeless fishermen. Last year, he said, 3,500 fishermen were given houses.

Mr. Babu said a net manufacturing factory would be set up in the State by spending Rs.30 crore. Mr. Randathani presided over the function. Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb inaugurated the public function. K. Kutty Ahamed Kutty, former Minister, was the chief guest.

The new bridge is being constructed at Ottumpuram estuary. The bridge is expected to give a fillip to the Edappalli-Kozhikode coastal corridor.

Mr. Randathani said that the bridge would speed up the work on the coastal corridor.

The bridge is being constructed jointly by the State government and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

NABARD district development manager K.P. Padmakumar, Harbour Engineering Department chief engineer S. Madhavan Namboothiri, superintending engineer P. Lata, Tanur block panchayat president Thottiyil Shareefa, Tirurangadi block panchayat president V.V. Jameela, Tanur panchayat president M.P. Ashraf, and Parappanangadi panchayat president Zeenath Ali Bapu spoke.
