The Ombudsman for Local Self-Government Institutions has instructed the Thalassery municipality to obtain a scientific report from a competent authority pertaining to a complaint against mobile towers of three companies functioning in close vicinity to the Mubarak Higher Secondary School here.

The petitioner, a resident of Saidar Palli Junction here, had brought to the notice of the ombudsman the presence of the towers, including that of BSNL, which was accorded permission by the municipality and the Pollution Control Board. The other two had not been given sanction.

The complainant had apprehended radiation and health hazard to the public, following which the order was issued by M.N. Krishnan, the ombudsman. The order says that notices should be issued to the petitioner and those running the towers, their versions and the legal aspect studied, apart from getting a scientific report within three months from the date of the order.

Municipal sources told The Hindu that various universities, Indian Space Research Organisation, and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre have been asked to send reports on the matter.

Once they were received, the municipality would initiate steps.
