KOCHI: Steps will be taken to ensure that the residents of Mattanchery benefit from tourism, said Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.

He was speaking after inaugurating the house renovation scheme for slum dwellers in Mattanchery. The scheme is being taken up jointly by the Kerala Development Project and the National Slum Development Scheme.

More than 400 families, evicted from Fort Kochi Veli beach during the expansion of INS Dronacharya of the Southern Naval Command, are staying in different parts of West Kochi. About 250 families in Rameswaram Colony and 182 in other divisions of the Corporation will benefit from the scheme.

Mayor Mercy Williams presided.
