The reconstruction of the Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam road corridor under the City Roads Improvement Programme (CRIP) has entered the last phase. Minister for Public Works M. Vijayakumar will inaugurate the widened and reconstructed stretch on Wednesday evening.
Project officials said only finishing touches, including the planning of grass on traffic islands and paving of footpath was left to be done. The 1.4-km-long corridor from the Vellayambalam junction to the Sri Ramakrishna junction has been widened to 18 metres, with a footpath of two metres on either side. The road surface will be given a 2 cm thick layer of black top after one month. As many as 54 trees have been planted on either side of the stretch.
The Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL) has made a recommendation to the traffic police to declare the entire length of the road as ‘no parking zone' to avoid traffic congestion. A TRDCL official said they had proposed paid parking at a later stage at specific locations.
