The renovated Lions Children’s Park on the Kozhikode beach was formally inaugurated on Sunday by Lions District Governor Suchitra Sudhir and Taarini Nidhish, a little girl.
The Lions Park was founded in 1966 and a children’s park was added to it in 1971. Since then, it has been the only patch of greenery on a four-km stretch of the beach. It has been a spot of relaxation for generations and the entry is free. Thousands of children throng the place every week. On weekends, it is often filled to the brim with frolicking visitors.
However, the park had been in a state of neglect. Repeated reports in the media and pleas by social service organisations finally opened the eyes of the authorities. Park maintenance committee chairman P.S. Gopakumar told The Hindu that Rs.10 lakh had been spent on the renovation. A new fountain, a merry-go-round, a couple of swings, and seating arrangements are newly added, while the rest of the rides have been repaired and painted.
The park will celebrate its golden jubilee next year.
