KOCHI: The Ernakulam district unit of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) organised World Red Cross day celebrations here on Saturday.

S. D. Jayaprasad, chairman of the State Pollution Control Board, inaugurated the programme. K. V. Ramachandran, vice-president of IRCS, presided.

Joseph J. Palakkapilly, district secretary of IRCS; Peethambaran, Deputy District Medical Officer; K.V. Beena, District Programme Manager, National Rural Health Mission; Rosy Sebastian, Superintendent, General Hospital, Ernakulam; Ponnamma Parameswaran, treasurer of IRCS district unit, and A. K. Sirajudheen, joint secretary, spoke.

Kothamangalam taluk hospital received the best taluk hospital award on the occasion. Gynaecology and surgery (women) wards received the awards for the best wards at general hospital. T. N. Sudha received the best staff nurse award while K. J. Laila bagged the best nursing assistant award. Anilkumar won the best hospital attender award.
