The Union Ministry for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation has approved the inclusion of SMP Colony in the city in the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY), a project of the Union government for creating a slum-free India.

Mayor Prasanna Earnest, who is in New Delhi in this connection, said Rs.17.85 crore would be allocated for SMP Colony under RAY.

As many as 290 families live in the colony. Under the RAY programme, 9-storey apartments would replace the buildings there. The Centre would provide financial assistance to States willing to assign property rights to slum-dwellers, she said.
