Visits flood-hit areas of Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram

Kozhikode: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has made a whistle-stop tour through the flood-ravaged parts of Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts on Friday.

He, later, urged the authorities to take steps to ensure that ration reached all the flood victims.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr Chandy said he was distressed to find that free ration was not reaching all the flood-affected people even though it was promised by the Government “Though free distribution of ration rice has been promised by the Government, it has not started reaching all those who needed it in Wayanad and Kozhikode districts,” the Opposition Leader said.

Earlier, Mr. Chandy visited the flood-affected areas of Manathavadi taluk where the damage caused by the rain had been particularly severe. He also visited the flood relief camps in Kalpetta before leading to Kooderanji in Kozhikode.

On the response of the Central Government to appeals for urgent measures to defuse the agriculture sector in Wayanad, Mr. Chandy said that during a recent visit to Delhi he and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala had called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi and apprised her of the situation in Wayanad where farmers’ suicide was high. “We have made a request that Ms. Sonia Gandhi or Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should pay a visit to Wayanad for a first-hand feel of the farmers’ distress .Ms. Gandhi’s response has been positive,” Mr. Chandy said. The travel plans of the Opposition Leader for the day included a visit to Wandoor in Malappuram district where severe damage was wrought by recent rain.
