Thrissur: Forest officials on Wednesday took N.R. Kannan, Principal of the Guruvayur campus of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan (Deemed University) at Puranattukara, into custody in connection with a case of missing sandalwood trees on the campus.

The officials inspected the 17-acre campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the presence of a member of Adattu grama panchayat and found six sandalwood pieces outside the library and the principal’s quarters.

The officials had inspected the campus during Onam on a complaint filed by Janekeeya Vedi secretary Krishna Kumar.

The Principal’s quarters could not be inspected as he was away during Onam.

The Principal told officials that the room in which two sandalwood pieces were found was earlier used by a domestic help.

He was taken for interrogation to the Forest office at Ponganamkadu.

Kannan has been Principal of the Guruvayur campus of the Sansthan for nine years. The Sansthan in Thrissur was set up at Pavaratty and later relocated to Puranattukara. The Sansthan was declared a deemed university on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission on May 7, 2002.
