THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Railways have taken concerted steps to avert accidents involving elephants in the Madukarai-Kanjikode section.Minister for Railways Mamta Banerjee said in her reply to a letter written by Forest Minister Benoy Viswom that strict instructions had been given to reduce the speed of trains along ‘A’ and ‘B’ lines in the 490 to 520 km stretch between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The trains would be run in such a speed that it could be stopped on sighting an elephant on the track. The drivers had also been asked to sound the siren in the accident-prone areas. Mr. Viswom had earlier visited the accident-prone areas and had initiated steps for constructing an electric fence there.
