Call to appoint adequate number of personnel

Plea to limit work time to eight hours

Call to set up more ticket counters

KOZHIKODE: Calicut Branch Committee of the Dakshin Railway Employees Union (DREU) has listed out a set of demands that needed to be met to enable railway employees to function more efficiently.

A major grievance of the union was that adequate number of staff was not appointed to meet the increased workload.

The result was that employees were called upon to put in extra hours of work. Leave was also denied to employees.

Long queues in front of ticket counters at railway stations has become a common sight due to staff shortage, it was added.

The union demanded that work hours be limited to eight hours, inter-locking system be installed at all railway level crossings, besides providing basic infrastructure at the level-crossing lodges.

The union also demanded opening of more tickets counters commensurate with the increase in the number of trains, and pass’engers.

The demands were highlighted at a dharna conducted by DREU at the Kozhikode Railway Station on Monday.

Vice president of DREU central committee K. Ashokan inaugurated the dharna.

As part of the protest programme dharna was held at different centres from November 1 to 10.
