There is a 44 per cent increase in the earnings of Palakkad Railway Division in the current financial year compared to the last year.

At the Republic Day celebrations of the Palakkad Railway Division here on Saturday Divisional Railway Manager Piyush Agarwal said that “the total earnings of Palakkad Division stand at Rs.698 crore in the current financial year.”

The earning from freight soared by 128 per cent as compared with the previous year, recording Rs.303 crore. The earnings from the passenger segment have also increased to Rs.356 crore, which is 11.40 per cent higher than the previous year, he said.

The DRM said that the number of passengers carried during the current year was 667 lakh which was 2.42 per cent higher than the previous year and surpassed the target.

Palakkad Division had achieved punctuality of 95.7 per cent for mail and express trains and 95.9 per cent for passenger trains during the year.

The DRM said that the Railways had taken over 230.10 acres of land from the State government for construction of the proposed rail coach factory at Kanjikode. Request had also been placed for an additional 94.85 acres of land. The boundary wall was being constructed, he said.

The speed of 39 express and 14 passenger trains had been increased, gaining a total 521 minutes. During the current financial year, 595 special trains had been operated. Automatic Ticket Vending Machines had been installed at Palakkad, Shoranur, Kozhikode, Thalassery, and Kannur railway stations, Mr. Agarwal said.
