As part of Corporation drive to enforce plastic ban

KOLLAM: The health wing of the Kollam Corporation has started taking steps to implement the plastic ban, which came into effect on September 1.

On Wednesday, Corporation authorities raided several super markets, public markets and shops. Corporation health standing committee chairperson Prasanna Earnest said that in spite of the ban, many shops were found using

plastic bags below the thickness of 30 microns.

During Wednesday’s raids, more than 15 kg of plastic in the banned grade were seized. She said the raids would

continue. There is a High Court stay on the ban on plastic bags between 30 and 50 microns.

Shops found violating the ban will be fined Rs.250 each initially. In the coming days, the fine will be increased to

Rs.5000. Cancellation of licenses will be considered if shops further violate the ban.

Ms. Earnest said though shop owners were aware of the ban, bags was being widely used.

Shop owners said there was no alternative. Customers insist on a bag to carry home their purchase and they feel plastic bags are most convenient, they said.
