‘Radheyanaya Karnan,’ produced by Signals Valluvanad, Malappuram, and directed by Rajesh Irulam, has been adjudged the best play in the State Professional Drama Awards competition for 2012.
The award carries a purse of Rs.30,000, a citation and a statuette. The play also won awards in three other categories — best playwright, lighting, and background score.
Manoj Narayanan has been selected as the best director for the play ‘Kuriyedathu Thathri.’
Murukesh Kakkur and Kalamandalam Sandhya Murukesh have been named best actor and actress, respectively, for their performances in the same play.
They will get a purse of Rs.12,000, a citation, and a statuette each.
N.N. Ilayathu has been selected for the life-time achievement award, which carries a purse of Rs.30,000, a citation, and a statuette.
Hemant Kumar, who wrote the plays ‘Radheyanaya Karnan,’ ‘Kuriyedathu Thathri,’ and ‘Parakayapravesam,’ has been named the best playwright.
He will get a cash prize of Rs.15,000, a citation and a statuette.
Cherunniyur Jayaprasad, who wrote ‘Oru Manasastrajnante Bharatha Paryadanam,’ is the second best playwright. He will get a purse of Rs.10,000, a citation, and a statuette.
The awards in other categories, each carrying a purse of Rs.7,500, a citation, and a statuette, are as follows.
Second best actor: Satheesh K. Kunnathu (‘Parakaya Pravesam’); second best actress: Manju Reji (‘Dr@Superspecialty’); best comedian: Athurungal Subhash (‘Kannadi’) and Appie Hippie Vinod (‘Swargam Bhoomiyilanu’); best singer (men): Harikrishnan (‘Oru Manasastrajnante Bharatha Paryadanam’); best singer (women): Praveena (‘Oru Manasastrajnante Bharatha Paryadanam,’ ‘Harischandran,’ ‘Thenali Raman’); best music director: Aleppey Rishikesh (‘Oru Manasastrajnante Bharatha Paryadanam,’ ‘Harischandran,’ ‘Thenali Raman,’ ‘Swargam Bhumiyilanu’); best lyricist: Ramesh Kavil (‘Oru Manasastrajnante Bharatha Paryadanam’, ‘Harischandran,’ ‘Swargam Bhumiyilanu’); best background score: Paulose Johns, Reji Gopinath (‘Radheyanaya Karnan’); best stage design: Vijayan Kadamberi (‘Radheyanaya Karnan’); best costume/make-up: Kalanilayam Jayaprakash (‘Harischandran’); best book on theatre: ‘Papavicharam CJyude Natakangalil’ by Thumbaman Thomas.
The awards were decided by a jury comprising M.R. Gopakumar (chairman), C.K. Thomas, and P.V. Krishnan Nair (member secretary).
The jury that selected the best book on theatre comprised M. Thomas Mathew, Chandra Dasan, and T.M. Abraham.
