1,36,634 children to be given polio vaccine

Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan launched the pulse polio immunisation drive in the district at the District Hospital on Sunday.

District panchayat president Radha V. Nair presided over the function. Kottayam Municipal chairman M.P. Santhosh Kumar, District Collector Mini Antony, district medical officer N. M. Ayesha Bhai and National Rural Health Mission district project manager A. Nizar also participated on the occasion among others.

According to the district health authorities, a total of 1,36,634 children aged below five have been targeted for administering the polio drops. In addition, over 5 lakh houses will be covered as part of house-to-house coverage efforts. The vaccine is currently being administered at 1,281 booths in the district. They have been established at public health institutions, private hospitals, anganvadis and other selected places. In addition, there are 43 booths in transit zones such as railway and bus stations, and 20 mobile booths that will cover areas inhabited by immigrant labourers and venues used for public gatherings.
