`Government owes an explanation to the public on rise in debt figure'

KOLLAM: Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has urged the State Government to come out with a White Paper on the State's financial position.

He was talking to presspersons at Pathanapuram near here on Saturday when his Kerala March entered Kollam district.

Mr. Vijayan pointed out that as soon as the United Democratic Front (UDF) assumed power in 2001, the Government came out with a White Paper on the financial position in order to target the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government. As such, a similar White Paper is required at the end of its term.

He said the debt figures of the State had reached Rs.50,000 crores during the UDF rule. The Government owed an explanation to the people on how the debt position had reached such frightening levels, especially when no development activities had taken place. He said as a political party, the CPI(M) welcomed the Narendran Commission report. The party had always insisted that the reservation system should not be upset. When the Government comes out with it, the CPI(M) would make its opinion clear. Asked whether his party would contest more seats in the coming Assembly election, he said the CPI(M) was yet to decide on the number. The party had not taken up for discussion the issue pertaining to the kind of relationship the LDF should have with the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran). ``The CPI is reported to have taken its decision on the DIC(K) issue''.

Addressing a meet at Pathanapuram, he alleged that the UDF had reached an understanding with the RSS for the Assembly election. The UDF will secretly support five RSS-backed BJP candidates in return for RSS support for UDF candidates in the remaining 135 constituencies.
